why we organize
Organizing is the foundation of the IBEW. At Local 26, we’re committed to improving the lives of electrical workers by helping them gain the wages, benefits, and respect they deserve. Whether you’re a journeyman, apprentice, or helper, organizing gives you the opportunity to build a better future both on and off the job.
what is organizing?
Organizing means uniting workers who are not currently represented by a union and providing them with the protection, benefits, and voice they deserve in the workplace.
The National Labor Relations Act protects the rights of employees to organize, form, join, or assist labor organizations. That means you have the legal right to speak with a union representative without fear of employer retaliation.
Whether you’re working in commercial, residential, or low-voltage sectors, organizing connects you to a supportive community that stands up for fair treatment, better conditions, and a stronger career path.

objectives of the international brotherhood of electrical workers
To organize all workers in the entire electrical industry in the United States and Canada, including all those in public utilities and electrical manufacturing, into local unions;
To promote reasonable methods of work;
To cultivate feelings of friendship among those in our industry;
To settle all disputes between employers and employees by arbitration (if possible);
To assist each other in sickness or distress;
To secure employment;
To reduce the hours of daily labor;
To seek higher and higher standard of living;
To seek security for the individual;
And, by legal and proper means, to elevate the moral, intellectual, and social conditions of our members, their families, and dependents, in the interest of a higher standard of citizenship.
